Praying during school can be tricky. First you have to find a place to pray, and if you do, somebody may try to talk to you while you're praying. I don't know about you, but I have prayed in strange places including at an amusement park, hallways, stairwells, locker rooms, and more. But I've also been in situations where I needed to pray, but didn't know where or was embarrassed. Sometimes, it seems like such a hassle to find a place to pray, and it may feel inconvenient. Don't worry these feelings are normal at first, but remember how important praying to Allah SWT is and take pride in being a Muslim. Our prayer is one of the most sacred components of our lives as Muslims, and we just like we make sports, friends, and school a priority, we need to make prayer a priority as well. Below are some tips for how to pray during school, and what to do if somebody says - "Hey, are you ok?!"
Time: Know the times you need to pray. It may be Fajr because athan happens after you get on the bus, or Duhr during or after your lunch break. It can also be Asr if you're having after school activities. Bottom line is know when the prayer times are, and know when you have to pray. You can have the Prayer app on the phone to help you out!
2. Prepare: Just like you don't forget your lunch box, make sure to pack a hijab, and a plastic/portable prayer rug (I sometimes use paper-towel if I forgot my portable prayer rug) and keep it in your backpack or locker. Also make sure to know Qibla (the direction to pray). You can have an app on your phone or learn how to use the compass.
3. Scout the area: Look around for possible places to pray. I find that libraries work perfectly! Ask students older than you where they pray. If you're still unable to find an area, ask a teacher or supervisor about where you can pray. Tell them it'll only take 5 minutes and you can pray anywhere, and it's preferred to have some privacy. Make sure you ask before the time you need to pray, so you're prepared. Ask if you can use this space regularly -then you don't have to ask everyday.
4. Educate: Tell your friends or others around you that you're going to pray. I've often told a friend that I'm praying, so that she can stand guard and tell people what I'm doing in case they're wondering. If somebody tries to talk to you while you're praying, just continue praying, and afterwards see if you can find them. Tell them that you were just praying, and that it's part of your religion. Most people are really understanding! Also the more people you educate, the less times you have to explain yourself later.
5. Have faith that Allah SWT knows you're trying your best: Sometimes you prepare and things still don't work out, but make Duaa that Allah SWT makes it easier for you. Find other Muslim friends to help encourage each other, and learn not be embarrassed about your faith. SubhanAllah you're Muslim, which is an amazing blessing! Remember, every time you're thinking of Allah SWT, Allah SWT will think of you.
