Are you following our blog?
You may be a teacher, a mother, or a college student, but you all have something in common. You want to start your safe space (a halaqa, religious study group, or a girls' youth group). We will outline the major steps for starting a halaqa in three easy steps. This site is mostly to help you with step 3. So, let me explain....
Starting a halaqa is exciting and is sometimes a daunting task. You want to help young girls or teenagers, inspire them, and become their role model. Renew your intentions, and make sure you are doing this for Allah (SWT) and make dua that Allah SWT will ease and bless this process. Next decide on your goals: do you want to cover seerah, Quran, hadith, aqeeda, personality traits, or topics suggested by the girls (which I highly recommend). I recommend typing or writing this all down because it will help you with focusing your ideas. Having a Halaqa notebook or binder is a great way to be organized!
Without logistics, your are unlikely to get very far. First, decide on your age group (middle school, high school, or college). Then decide on location (mosque, your home, community center, park, rotating at girls' homes, online, etc). Make sure the location is convenient for both yourself and the girls, and is generally quiet and has the resources you need (carpeted area, tables, gym etc). Also make sure it will be available for at least an hour. Lastly, you need to figure out advertising and a form of communication. You may need to make a poster, share it on social media or hang it in your local community center. To be able to regularly reach the girls about the next halaqa, you will need a reliable form of communication: email, Facebook group, Whatsapp, text messaging, GroupMe, Slack, etc. Pick something you know how to use and something the girls will find easy to use.
You've done all the legwork, and now you're ready to start. This website is created to help you with content and ideas for your halaqa. First start with Halaqa Tips to give you general tips you may find helpful. This website includes templates that you can edit to suit your audience, pre-created halaqas handouts and activities. The heavy lifting is done, so you just pick what you want to do! You can go in the order we have listed, or mix and match as you see fit. Under Resources, you will find speakers, books, websites which I found helpful for creating my halaqas. You may decide that you want your halaqa to be a book club and one of these books may be a good read. Lastly, we will upload podcasts and videos which will be great conversation starters!
