What’s your name? How old are you and where do you live?
My name is Salma El-Sakka. I am 22 and I live in London, Ontario Canada. I currently work as a regional project manager for two districts in a home health care company.
Why did you decide to become a project manager?
One of the key components of project management is creating the project plan based on the requirements and existing restrictions. The challenge of creating the plan was like a puzzle to me that allowed me to be creative yet logical; I find a lot of fulfillment in this. I also wanted to use my skills to make a positive difference in the lives of others and show others that a Muslim woman is just as capable as any other successful person.
Who is your biggest inspiration?
My biggest inspiration is my mother as she is the most kind, selfless, hardworking person I know. But most importantly, she never stops striving for personal, professional and spiritual growth.
How was your path becoming a project manager?
When I studied project management, I found that my program was very male-dominated. While this was not a significant challenge, I did experience some frustration from feeling undermined by my peers. However, I chose not to dwell on other people's perceptions of me because I was confident in my skills and capabilities.
Did you face any struggles being a Muslim woman in this field?
Alhamdulillah, I currently do not face any struggles being a Muslim in this field. The company I work for is very inclusive and respectful of diversity :)
What’s your favorite thing about being Muslim?
My favourite thing about being a Muslim is knowing and believing that Allah is watching over me and I am never truly alone
If somebody wants to be a project manager when they grow up, what should they do?
Some of the most apparent skills required for managing projects is being logical and organized. However, If someone wanted to pursue project management, I would advise them to recognize the hidden skills you will need to master in order to be successful.
Be adaptable and creative: Many things may not always go according to plan and you need to be ready to work with your current circumstances to achieve your objectives
Learn to be a Leader: You will need to discover how you can inspire and manage a team so you can work together to achieve your goals. Remember a chain is only as strong as its weakest link
If you can give any advice to young Muslim girls/teens, what would you tell them?
Pursue your dreams and aspirations wholeheartedly because your potential is only limited by your and perception of yourself. The path you choose will be worth it, but that doesn't mean it will always be easy. So in times of difficult decision, choose to act kindly and know the best return will be given to you by Allah and not the people. Hold on to hope and embrace who you are and you will find the strong, capable girl you were always meant to be.
